Did you know that urinary incontinence affects up to 37% of women, and 13% of men? Did you know that 70% of people who experience urinary leakage do not seek treatment or advice? What is incontinence? Incontinence is when you experience any form of bladder or bowel leakage. It may happen when you run, cough, sneeze or rush to the toilet. This usually occurs due to a weakness in the pelvic floor muscles. The pelvic floor muscles usually become weaker with age, childbirth or chronic bowel issues and con stipation. It not only affects women, but also men particularly after prostate surgery. Many people think it is part and parcel with life, but there are many things you can do to help it- at any age!
How can you fix it? Strengthening your pelvic floor muscles can make a large difference in reducing incontinence in patients. A pelvic floor physiotherapist will give you advice and education on diet and lifestyle factors, good bladder and bowel toileting routines and how to activate your pelvic floor correctly. Many people are unaware of whether they are using their pelvic floor correctly and without assessment you may never do your exer cises properly! It is advised to consult with a pelvic floor physiotherapist for assessment of your condition so that they can tailor a treatment plan specifically to your problem.
