Tennis elbow; not just a condition for athletes

What is Tennis Elbow?

Tennis elbow, also known as lateral epicondylitis, is a condition that is characterised by pain in the outer aspects of the elbow. The injury typically comes about from overusing the elbow and wrist in activities that requires repetitive gripping or straightening of the wrist.

Contrary to popular belief tennis elbow is more of a degenerative injury rather than and inflammatory injury. This indicates that using anti-inflammatory medications such as ibuprofen or cortisone injections may not be as helpful as we would like them to be to the condition. Evidence is now pointing more towards strengthening programs as the best treatment option.

What are the clinical signs?

Most people with this repetitive strain injury often experience outer elbow pain and noticeable weakness, especially during gripping activities. Despite its name, the condition isn’t limited to tennis players. It commonly affects those engaging in repetitive gripping tasks like weightlifting, typing, gardening, painting, or even lifting a kettle. These challenges can make everyday activities increasingly difficult.

Treatments for Tennis Elbow

Rest and a progressing return to activity is an important part of tennis elbow treatment to allow healing and limit overuse.

Based on our experience and the available evidence, we know that a gradual exercise program targeting the wrist extensor muscles can be extremely effective. Strengthening these muscles helps the wrist extensor tendon adapt and become stronger over time. However, it’s important to be patient and consistent, as results will not be immediate.

If your pain is too intense to start exercising, a physiotherapist can use hands-on techniques such as massage to help reduce your symptoms. This will help make it easier to begin an appropriate exercise regimen.

If you’re dealing with elbow pain, tennis elbow, or any other repetitive strain injury, consider booking an appointment with one of our qualified physiotherapists. They will assess your condition and guide you through the best treatment options.
